Phantom of the opera - Version 1
Scheveningen (Circus theater)/The Netherlands - 1993

Henk Poort, Joke de Kruijf, Peter de Smet

PRO-SHOT.
Full show, including curtain call and exit music. Some video problems for “Why have you…?” Close-ups quite blurry at times.  Kruijf has one of the best voices ever and this video doesn’t do her justice. There are some different choreographies not seen in the American version.

Phantom of the opera - Version 2
Scheveningen (Circus theater)/The Netherlands - 1993

Henk Poort, Joke de Kruijf, Peter de Smet

Same show as above.
Full show, including curtain call and exit music. NO video problems for “Why have you…?”  In the original PAL format and much clearer.

Phantom of the Opera - Cue tape
Scheveningen/Netherlands - 1993

Henk Poort, Joke de Kruijf, Peter de Smet

Very rare. Minor generation loss. You hear how all the cues are given during a show. The was not taped in color, I think, because there are no real colors. Not really a show to watch. The woman who gives the cues starts ticking during PotO. DVD (B+)

Phantom of the opera
Hamburg/Germany - March 31, 1999

Jerzy Jeszke, Lori Zeglarski, Bjorn Olson, Anders Sohlmann, Reinhard Schulze

Well-shot much like all the other videos from Germany, except it has some pretty intense color bleeding, I won't even talk about how bad Masquerade looks sometimes, and in Hannibal some of the people are yellow! Otherwise though its a good video. Jerzy is very good at times, he can get really into the character and it's great to watch, but at other times he's just kinda going through the motions, so some great moments and some dull moments. An overall good video and good cast.

Phantom of the opera
Hamburg/Germany - August 22, 1999

David Hunerjaeger (u/s), Valentina Kozhanova (u/s), Kyle Gonyea, Laurie Ann McGowan, Linda Bruske, Marcello Roncietto, Sabrina Harper, Stephan Drakulich, Eberhardt Neitzel

I've learned that Act 1 and Act 2 are from two different dates, which would explain why they're shot from different angles. Interesting video where the guy playing Firmin covers the Phantom. Vocally he is quite impressive, however it feels like he is very under-rehearsed, but he's not bad by any means, and he has some wonderful moments in the Final Lair.

Phantom of the Opera

Final performance. Alternate cast performs first act, main cast performs second.

Phantom of the opera - Final Matinee
Hamburg/Germany - June 30, 2001

Michael Nicholson (alt), Olivia Safe (u/s), Christopher Morandi (alt), Reinhard Schulze (u/s?), Anders Sohlmann, Evelyn Werner (u/s), Linda Bruske, Charlie Serrano, Kate Lawrence

This is a pretty good quality video of the 2nd-to-last performance of the legendary original Hamburg production. In an incredibly kind gesture, a TON of understudies and alternates were put on for this special occasion, which finally gives us a video of Michael Nicholson’s AMAZING Phantom. He’s got an incredible voice, and he gives an incredibly unique performance in the acting performance, he’s very very creepy! And tall. He just towers over tiny Olivia Safe. Olivia Safe is an incredibly cute, youthful Christine with a very nice voice! The rest of the cast gives it their all of course.

Phantom of the opera - Derniere
Hamburg/Germany - June 30, 2001

Ian Jon Bourg, Colby Thomas, Kyle Gonyea, David Hunerjaeger, Anders Sohlmann, Vera Borisova, Linda Bruske,
Marcello Roncietto, Kate Lawrence

Picture: 6/10, Sound: 7/10 Includes lots of footage at the stage door. Ian and Colby sing a lovely duet of 'Music of The Night' and 'Think of Me' combined.

Phantom of the Opera - Directorstape
Spain/Madrid, 2002

Juan Carlos Barona (alt Phantom), Julia Möller (alt Christine), Zenón Recalde (u/s Raoul).

Monitor video,  so no zoom. Some spotlight washout, including curtains in after the first act and curtain calls at the end. Soundboard audio
Missing 1_4

Phantom of the Opera
Budapest/Hungary - 2003

Attila Csengeri, Renata Krassy, Gabor Bot

Nice video with a good mix between full stage shots and close-ups. Act 1 has more close-ups than Act 2. A bit blurry and shaky sometimes. Very interesting to see first non-replica production of Phantom. Singing, especially by Csengeri, is excellent but the acting looks very odd at times. A lovely video though.

Phantom of the Opera
Madrid/Spain - 2003

Juan Carlos Barona, Julia Moller, Zenon Recalde

Three-camera proshot of the Madrid alternate cast; different from the other video of Barona, Moller, and Recalde. Sharp details and colors, but looks pixelated, like it was compressed when burned to DVD. Audio gets out of synch in the final scenes, unfortunately.

Phantom of the Opera - Directorstape
Stuttgart/Germany - 2003

Roy Weissensteiner (u/s), Marion Wilmer (u/s), Carsten Lepper

Phantom of the opera
Broadway/America - May 20, 2003

Full show, bootleg. Some spotlight washout. Starts really shaky and with heads in the way, only first couple of minutes during each act

Phantom of the Opera - 3rd National Music Box Tour
LA/America -  November 18, 2003

Brad Little, Marni Raab, Tim Martin Gleason, David Cryer, D.C. Anderson, Kim Stengel, Jimmy Smagula, Patti Davidson-Gorbea, Kate Wray*

Great sound and picture color. Mostly mid-zoom and wide shots with nice close-ups. Some great closeups, but the actual zooming is unsteady and fast. Some cover-ups including almost the entire Il Muto ballet and Raoul's jump into the lake. Some severe pixilation on extreme close-ups. Brad is fabulous as always, and Marni adds some interesting touches to the role of Christine.

Phantom of the Opera - WMV
LA/America - November 19, 2003

Brad Little (Phantom), Lisa Vroman (Christine), Tim Martin Gleason (Raoul)

Phantom of the Opera
Stuttgart/Germany - November 28, 2003

Steve Lucas (u/s), Maike Switzer, Carsten Axel Lepper, Stefan Müller-Ruppert, Marko Woytowicz, Barbara Grey Nystrom, Anette Kuhn, Marcello Ronchietto, Lara Glew

Some color saturation, but little/no bleeding.  Missing Don Juan until the end of Christine's verse of PONR.  Lots of head obstruction, wandering camera syndrome and very shaky, but some great close-ups now and then.  Steve is excellent.  One technical difficulty when he is not raised to the top of the staircase for Why So Silent and has to come in from the wings.

Phantom of the Opera - Highlights

John Owen-Jones, Rachel Barrell, Oliver Thornton, Richard Hazell, Sam Hiller, Sally Harrison, Heather Jackson, Rohan Tickell, Claire Tilling.

John's last show at the time. Brilliant, emotional performance from him. Amazing filming angle (from third row Orchestra), good closeups and audio. Unfortunately doesn't include curtain call. No Small Files. Missing the beginning of 'Masquerade', so footage of Celia Graham as Christine was spliced in.

Phantom of the opera
Broadway/America - March 2, 2005

Hugh Panaro, Julie Hanson, John Cudia

Lovely quality video, nice color and details, but filmer didn’t know show very well, resulting in more wide

shots than might be usual.

Gary, John & Elizabeth's last. Absolutely amazing video of these two fantastic leads' final performance. The video is a multicamera shoot with shots flawlessly edited together, making for almost no blackouts and a ton of closeups.

Phantom of the opera
US Tour (Dallas)/America - April 7, 2006

Phantom of the Opera - Derniere for Ethan

The picture in this video is wonderful, however the filming not so much, there are lots of heads in the way so there's a lot of shooting around to do, but normally it's done well. It is so wonderful to see another video of Ethan. He's changed quite a bit over the past 11 years, he's a lot more calm and not as over-the-top as he used to be, however he still gives an amazing performance and is as passionate about the role as ever, you can see him savor every last note, as this was his final Phantom performance, quite possibly for good. The audience goes wild at the end too, this is just an overall excellent performance.
Filmed by the same person as the Kroger and December Borchert videos.

Gary filling in for Howard McGillin. Excellent, widescreen capture, complete. But a lot went wrong (or the actors played their roles a bit different, I dunno)

Phantom of the opera
Osaka/Japan - July 1, 2007

Masayuki Sano, Tamami Sai, Yuosuke Kitazawa

Beautiful recent video of the Japanese cast. Taper sometimes drifts away from the action to focus on the stage sets, but overall a lovely video. Tamami Sai would later be in the Korean production, which made me doubly happy.

Phantom of the Opera - NFT
UK Tour/England - 2013

The Phantom of the Opera: Earl Carpenter, Christine Daee: Katie Hall, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny: Simon Bailey, Carlotta Giudicelli: Angela M Caesar, Monsieur Firmin: Andy Hockley, Monsieur Andre`: Simon Green, Madame Giry: Elizabeth Marsh, Ubaldo Piangi: Vincent Pirillo, Meg Giry: Hannah Cadec.

A beautiful caputre in 16:9 wide-screen featuring Katie Hall as Christine, who has a superb voice. The way she plays a young Christine added new dimensions to the character of Christine, making her more vulnerable to the Phantom and easily manipulated. Personally I really enjoy this touring production much more than the original staging. I find that the changes works better. Unfortunately the only problem with this recording is that due to late comers part of Music of the Night is missing.

Phantom of the Opera
US Tour (Costa Mesa, CA)/America - August 12, 2015

Chris Mann (The Phantom), Katie Travis (Christine), Storm Lineberger (Raoul), Jacquelynne Fontaine (Carlotta), Edward Staudenmayer (Andre), David Benoit (Firmin), Anne Kanengeiser (Madame Giry), Frank Viveros (Piangi), Morgan Cowling (Meg), Mark Emerson (The Auctioneer), Eric Ruiz, Edward Juvier, Dan Debenport, David Foley Jr., Allan Snyder, Christy Morton

The first capture of Chris and Katie in their roles. Nicely filmed overall; the first minute of the show is blacked out but it's complete after that with no washout and no obstruction. It's filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and Playbill scans.

A great capture of the Broadway production. There is one short blackout over the end of Think of Me and another over the beginning of Masquerade; the rest of the show is fully captured with just a couple quick dropouts in each act. There is one head that can occasionally be seen, but never blocks the action. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of shots. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Overall Rating: A-

A, Excellent HD capture of the long running show. This cast features actors who are the first Asian Christine and first African-American Raoul to play the roles. Also Andre is not played by Laird in this performance. It is an understudy

Phantom of the Opera

A strong tour cast lead by a very strong Phantom. Kaitlyn makes a stunning and beautiful Christine. A good capture with no blackouts, minimal washout, and no major obstructions. The lighting of this show is difficult and some scenes turned out darker. One head that is only visible in wide shots. It is filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent and includes curtain call with an obstructed BCEFA speech. A
